Ayurveda … or Not
I have found a lot of help from the principles of Ayurveda and by working directly with an Ayurvedic physician to determine a diet appropriate to my personal health needs and temperament. Ayurveda has a long history and tradition and is considered yoga’s sister science. Its efficacy has stood the test of time; it is not a fad diet that will be disproven next year when some new research comes out.
Central to the Ayurveda regime is the idea of doshas or personal types. Diets, exercise strategies and lifestyle practices are recommended relative to an individual’s type and specific situation. This approach explains a lot about why some people have success on food plans that prove disastrous to others.
As much as I love the Ayurvedic approach to diet and health, Ayurveda is not by any means a formal recommendation or a requirement for success in stabilizing a foundational relationship to food. For many, even the basic practices of Ayurveda would be difficult to implement. The appropriate diet for anyone will depend on where they are starting from relative to food, diet, physical health, and what their specific goals are. For instance, if your diet is largely meat-based, a dramatic shift to a vegetarian diet may prove too drastic. If your current diet is made up of fast food, meals in restaurants and convenience-oriented menus then the likelihood of being successful on a plan that consists of whole-foods cooked at home would be slim. The change required would quite likely feel too extreme and might prove to be a set-up for future rebellion or backsliding. Additionally, certain strict plans can work against someone with an eating disorder because they can tend to reinforce the neurotic rule-based relationship one may already have with food. Additionally, in emphasizing diet, we run the risk of looking to a diet to solve problems of the mind and heart, when dietary practices are a tool and a practice, not a solution to anything.
